Children are fascinated by trains from quite a young age, and this is not something that is surprising since they are really fascinating machines. There can be steam trains that run on coal, electric trains are all the rage now, and while some of them transport people from one location to another, there are also cargo trains out there, which transport everything from natural resources to food, to cars, and more to where they need to be taken to. Trains can have all sorts of colors, some are big, some are smaller, and since kids can’t drive them in real life, doing so with train games online is the best next thing!
So, the fact that Thomas and Friends are currently one of the world’s biggest franchises when it comes to children’s animation and entertainment is not something that we did not see coming, and the fact that the series has been around since 1984 is proof enough of its popularity. That was the year when the first episode of an animated story featuring Thomas the tank engine had been aired, and this series is based on The Railway Stories, a series of books by a father and son about train engines and trains, whose characters formed the basis of the franchise!
The first airing of the show has been in the UK, and five years later, the first episode also aired in the United States, and through the decades after that, the series only grew more popular. The newest season to be airing has started in the month of May in 2020, it is the show’s 24th season, which can only mean that kids and adults can’t have enough of these locomotives. If that is the case, don’t stop at just watching these characters you love so much, but interact with them directly through our Thomas and Friends Games!
Over the years we have worked very hard on this page to make sure it offers just the best games based on the franchise, so we will now give you a better look at it so that even if you are new to the series, you will see the worth in giving your time to playing our Thomas Games online, something we are positive you will not regret in the least!
Thomas & Friends: story and characters
The show is set in the fictional island of Sodor, which features the adventures of anthropomorphized locomotives, as well as road vehicles. This means that while the locomotives do look like normal ones you would see in day-to-day lives, these ones do have faces, which can make all sorts of facial expressions, and can behave just like humans, while still attending to their duties as locomotives that have to pull their train carts from one place to another.
There are all sorts of things happening in Sodor and lots of adventures for the characters to have, and all of them have some sort of educational aspect, be it teaching kids about shapes, maths, words, and other practical things that are useful in life, but also important lessons about feelings, emotions, and how to interact with the people around us in a nice way, so that we are all good human beings.
The show used to have a single narrator, with the engines never speaking themselves, but, as of season twelve, Thomas took on the role of narrator. Instead of normal animation, the stories of the show use to train models, and over them, CGI is used to give a living feeling to the characters. After season 13, the episodes are just CGI and animation, without any models being used anymore.
While the show revolves mainly around the locomotives, people and animals have been animated as well, mainly the many workers who tend to the locomotives, the coaches, and other workers, as well as passengers. Of course, humans are often great at taking care of the trains, but sometimes they make mistakes too.
The many locomotives of Sodor
Thomas is the title character and the most popular one of them all, and he is a blue train engine, with only once having been depicted as green. He works at North Western Railway, but started out as the station pilot, only to leave that job after wanting to see more of the world. He jumps into action, even if it is something others would be more suitable to do, which is why some would say he is cheeky or fussy. He can be forgetful, impatient, and quite full of himself at times, but there is someone to bring him back to reality always, such as his coaches, Annie and Clarabel.
Edward is also a blue engine, and one of the oldest ones in Sodor, something he is often teased about by his younger friends. Because he is older, he always has the knowledge to share and can be quite the optimistic type. Precisely because of his old age, he can be quite wise, as well as kind, always being ready to help others. Whenever engines misbehave or do something bad, Edward is the one who the coaches turn to sort things out!
The red engine of The Steam Team is James, who takes great pride in his amazing paint-job, and hates pulling trucks, believing he should only pull coaches. He feels quite superior to almost anyone around him, he is a vein locomotive, and quite shallow at times. Still, despite being not that liked by others, he gets help from them, and that is when he has to recognize he was not being nice and apologizes.
Henry is green, works at the Main Line, and was a failed prototype at the start, having needed some special coal to operate, but extensive work had been done to him so he is now fully functional and ready to go! He is usually friendly and does not cause trouble, but can be arrogant at times. He is one of the hardest-working engines, but he does have medical problems that prevent him from being active quite a lot. He is also known to be quite a nature lover, going as far as to hug some trees.
One of Sodor’s fastest and strongest engines is Gordon, who oftentimes pulls the railway’s express line, which makes him feel superior at times. He likes to boast about his accomplishments all the time, and can be quite annoying because of that, but, he still remains kindhearted, and whenever smaller engines need help, he is there to provide it to them.
One of the youngest engines in the gang is Percy, who is green and is smaller in size, having been brought in after a strike by the bigger engines. He enjoys getting in trouble, especially by pulling all sorts of tricks on other engines. He is the type to act first and think later, but is kind at heart, and is known to be quite funny, always trying to make people laugh, or himself.
There are also girls in the Steam Team, such as Nia, an engine from Kenya, who befriended Thomas during his travel around the world and eventually decided to stay in Sodor, who is positive and loves teaching the other engines new things. Another one is Rebecca, who often helps out Gordon, and is quite a big engine, but a shy one at the same time. She can be clumsy, but always gets the job done right!
