The Intertidal Zone, a children’s educational book made to teach the kids about the life forms in the sea and what goes on underwater was the origin of many ideas later used through SpongeBob SquarePants, which, at first, had been called SpongeBoy Ahoy, with the title having been changed after it was found out that name had already been trademarked. After its premiere in 1999, the show became an instant hit with critics and audiences alike, and it has not stopped since. Twelve seasons have been aired so far, with a thirteenth having been announced, and there had been no less than three movies had also been made for the franchise. The latest one is expected to be released in 2020.

The story of the show follows the title character, a yellow talking sponge living in the underwater town known as Bikini Bottom, whose house is a pineapple underwater, he works at a fast-food joint called the Krusty Krab and goes to a boating school. Bikini Bottom is an underwater city in the Pacific Ocean. The characters in this world are fish in different colors who live in houses made out of ships that have sunken or lost parts of them, and they drive boatmobiles, which is a combination of cars and boats, as the show aims to imitate aspects of human life in that of fish and sea creatures. There are restaurants, two competing ones called Krusty Krab and Chum Bucket, there is a Boating School, the Treedome, which has oxygen and is enclosed from water, or the Goo Lagoon, a beach hangout underwater. Amazing, right?

Just like his full name suggests, he is a square-shaped yellow sponge whose name is Bob, who is usually dressed in brown pants, a white shirt, and a red tie. His house is a pineapple under the sea, and his day job is that of fry cook at the Krusty Krab, home of the Krabby Patty, one of the most popular fictional foods ever. While he goes regularly to the boating school, so he can drive a boatmobile, he never got his license and is bad at driving.

Patrick Star is Spongebob’s best friend, the second most-known character in the show, and probably one of the most important ones since this duo of friends is inseparable, and when they get in trouble, they usually do it together and get out of it together, also. He is an iconic starfish in the color pink, who wears swim trunks with a flowery pattern on them, and he lives under a rock. Yes, a rock! One of the main traits Patrick is known for, even by those who have not watched the show is that he is really, really, stupid. His intelligence is very low, but he is still kind-hearted, and really loves his best friend, from whom he can’t separate. Despite his kindness, you don’t want to piss off Patrick, who can get really angry at times, just like real starfish.

Squidward Tentacles he is a cashier, but also is a next-door neighbor. Squidward gets annoyed by his antics most of the time, as he has quite a grumpy personality and quite a sarcastic sense of humor. Still, he deeply cares for the sponge character, who might be the closest thing to his best friend. He considers himself an incredible artist, but no one really cares about that. He is also a little bit narcissistic, and his hobbies include playing the clarinet.

Mr. Krabs is the red krab who owns Krusty Krab, who is quite smart, confident, and really loves money, which is why he wants to sell as much food as possible. His house is in the shape of an anchor, where he lives with his teenage daughter, a whale called Pearl. He wants to save as much money as possible, and while he cares for his daughter, he does not necessarily care about his employees, taking advantage of Spongebob’s good nature quite a lot. Pearl Krabs only wants to make friends and fit in with other fish, which is difficult because of her big size. She loves buying clothes and being in-style, as well as listening to music, like most teenage girls.
