To reach each level and clear it you need to pass through a door, but to do that you need to defeat the required number of monsters first, which is usually all the monsters in that level that you encounter.

Don’t only beat them up, but make sure to grab power-ups and weapons to use against them, or buy them in the shop with the coins you collect through the various platform routes.
