To defeat the robots you have to punch them, which you do use the A key, while you use the right and left arrows to move, you jump with the up arrow, and you use the down one to crouch. Robots that have been defeated will leave coins behind them, so don't hesitate to grab them and use them to buy upgrades for your hero.

Of course, you will get points in return for all the robots that you defeat, so aim for a big score, and try to reach as further as possible into the enemy's territory without losing your health bar, because if it is completely depleted you are going to lose and have to start your journey all over again.
